Claude Monet, The 1874 Exhibition, and The Art Market

June 16-21, 2024

$7,995

This trip is inspired by the Spring Orsay exhibition Paris 1874. Inventing Impressionism (Orsay Museum, March 26, 2024 - July 14, 2024). This exhibition is celebrating the 150 anniversary of the 1874 exhibition at the Galerie Gorges Petit, an art dealer who displayed art from different artists and styles. This is during this exhibition that Claude Monet has exhibited Impression, Sunrise (1872, Marmottan Museum, Paris), title used by an art critic as the basis for the word “Impressionism”. Usually on display only at the Marmottan Museum, this painting might be part of the Orsay exhibition, which would be a premiere.

Using this exhibition as a base for our trip, we will visit the exhibition and then we will visit Paris and make some complementary connections, like seeing the Orangerie Museum, where his Waterlilies are on display. We will walk through the 9th arrondissement, where Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840. He house was at 45, rue Laffitte, on the fifth floor. By coincidence, the rue Laffitte happened to be then the art dealers’ street.

Claude Monet lived in many different places in France, in England and in the Netherlands. We will follow his footsteps by going also to the Paris suburb in Argenteuil, Verneuil and finally Giverny, this beautiful village where he has spent a large part of his life and where he died.

As we cannot reduce a trip to Paris to Claude Monet, our stay will be highlighted by visiting artist’s workshops, degustations to give you a feeling of being a real Parisian, a dinner in one of the most typical Parisian brasserie, and a private visit to an auction house.

My goal for this trip is not only to share my passion for Claude Monet and to give you the keys to go further in your knowledge about the artist and the man. I cannot reduce Claude Monet to the word Impressionism as he didn’t create this name, and during this trip you will learn about why his name is always associated with Impressionism and what it means. You will also learn about a politician who played a big part during WWI but also in the legacy of Claude Monet to France. We will also be honored to welcome for Isolde Pludermacher is senior curator for painting at the Musée d'Orsay.
